The best way to prune your trees

Unfortunately every year, many trees are cut in ways that are detrimental to their health and survival. Fear of trees becoming too big or dangerous is a common reason why people over reduce their trees by cutting from the top all the way to a bud or lateral branch.

Known commonly as tree topping, this technique involves removing 50% to 100% of its leaves. As the prime source of food, leaves are essential for trees to grow and removing them will temporarily starve them, making them fight for its survival by creating rapid growth of shoots below each cut. If a tree doesn't have sufficient stored energy reserves, these cuts will weaken and eventually the tree will die.  This actually then makes it more dangerous for home owners as heavy winds will cause the fast growing shoots to break easily and could cause potential damage.  Topping usually brings more problems later on as these poorly maintained trees will need to be pruned in a few years and if they die, they will need to be removed.

The best way to cut a tree is to trim it just beyond the branch collar in a 45 degree angle. There are 2 main tree trimming techniques - heading and thinning. Heading is a way of shaping the growth of the tree by controlling the direction of the growth and its overall size. Done properly, heading will encourage more side growth and control flowering and fruiting.

Thinning is the process of reducing the number of branches to allow more sunlight to the interior as well as to prevent overgrowth. Both methods when used, will ensure the trees will be healthy and attractive. Our Northern Beaches tree service only uses proper tree pruning methods that wont disfigure or mutilate the tree.

How to prune a tree
Removing a tree properly

A number of trees can be removed without approval by council. A full list can be found at the local council website.

5 Situations when can you legally remove a tree

Every council has strict guidelines according to what tree services can be done on your property. Any form of tree trimming, tree lopping or tree removal done without permits or permission can result in hefty fines and penalties so it is advisable to know what the rules are.

According to the rules instituted by council, there are a few conditions that allow for tree removal. Whilst this list is not exhaustive, it provides a handy guideline. Of course, for more detailed information, please get in touch with us and we can advise you on the available options for your situation. At the end of the day, professional tree service advice will save you time and money.

1. When it is less than 5m in height
2. When the species is on an exempt list as per the Northern Beaches council guidelines
3. When it is considered a hazard or risk to property or human life either by a qualified level 5 Arborist or by Rural Fire Services
4. When the tree has died or fallen as a result of a storm and is no longer used to house native animals
5. When your property is located in an area that is part of the Northern Beaches council approved hazard reduction program
  • What is the process for getting my trees removed or trimmed?

If you want a tree to be trimmed or removed, we need to understand whether you need council approval to do so.

The Northern beaches council requires a permit for tree removal and trimming unless it meets a number of conditions.

Unless you want to go through each regulation yourself, an easier way is to get a level 5 Arborist report outlining what can and can't be done based on council conditions and the welfare of the trees in question. We can provide you with this service and help you understand the options you have. Just get in touch with our friendly tree services Northern Beaches team.

  • When should I remove a tree?

As stated, Northern Beaches council has stringent rules around tree removal. If a tree is considered to be a potential hazard (either to property or people), or is sick, infested or already dead, then an arborist report can be submitted as part of an application to remove the tree. However, if the tree is blocking your home from getting a better view, to enhance solar power or doesn't meet your aesthetics, then then chances of getting approval from council will be much lower.  Some trees are on the exempt tree removal list, which means that they can be removed without prior council approval unless they are in a heritage area or identified as being a heritage item. The best approach to finding this out is either to engage directly with the local council or just ask us for tree service advice.

  • How much will it cost to get an Arborist report?

Getting a level 5 Arborist report is something we can provide as part of our tree services Northern Beaches team. Generally it will cost $500 -800 per tree, depending on the size, layout, species and the conditions surrounding it. Often we can get cost savings due to our experience and efficiency. Please allow 10-14 days for a full report to be done.

  • What is a AQF level 5 Arborist?

It refers to someone trained in the art and science of tree care with a minimum diploma in Arboriculture. Northern Beaches council will only accept submissions from a level 5 Arborist that recommends a tree be removed due to danger or safety concerns.

  • Is tree removal considered a tax deductible expense on an investment property?

We are not qualified to provide tax advice but according to the ATO, it may be an expense that can be claimed if the tree removal relates to disease or infestation in the tree during the time of ownership (not prior). For more information, we recommend speaking to your tax accountant.

  • Are you insured to provide tree removal or tree trimming services??

We take great care to ensure that accidents while on site don't occur so that your property and persons are safe. However, in the event of something happening,  we have public liability insurance so any damage that could be caused by the removal of trees is covered.

  • How much of a tree can I prune without damaging it?

Generally speaking we work on a rule of thumb that no more than 25% of a tree's canopy should be removed at any one time to minimise tree shock. Older trees especially can't be pruned too much as it can lead to irreversible stress. Tree lopping is not recommended unless there it is done correctly for the right type of tree.

  • How do I know if my tree is dying or not?

We generally look for vital signs such as whether the tree has leaves, if the bark is falling off and also the colour of the tissue under the bark. Generally green tissues under the bark indicate some form of life and may mean that the tree is still salvageable.

  • Why should I use a professional tree surgeon as opposed to doing things myself?

The question to be asked in reply is "why would you want to do Tree maintenance on your own property?" If its to save on costs, there is much more to be gained in adding value to your property, getting professionals to leave a fantastic result rather than risk making things worse by doing it yourself. Trees differ by species, size, conditions, health, location and how they interact with their surroundings. They are highly sensitive and without the skill and knowledge of how to trim or remove trees properly, the chances of getting the result you want will be slim.  Tree services can also be very dangerous, particularly if it requires a ladder or ropes or heavy machinery to reach up to.  A broader perspective on tree service will show clearly that DIY tree lopping is not something we recommend at all.
